In contemporary conflict and post- conflict settings women continue to face heightened risks of sexual violence, exploitation and exclusion, a challenge being addressed by the United Nations Commision on the Status of Women. Armed conflict often leads to the breakdown of legal systems, law enforcement and community based networks, which creates conditions in which women are exposed to gender-based violence, trafficking and displacement, often as a tactic in war. The collapse of government institutions leaves them without adequate protection. Displacement into camps or informal settlements introduces new risks and inadequate access to basic necessities like sanitation and healthcare. The aftermath compounds with long-term trauma, disrupted education and limited economic opportunities all of which reinforce vulnerability. Furthermore, gender normal and societal limitations silences survivors and reveals that the impact of these conflicts not just raises safety concerns for women but destroys their ability to rebuild their lives.
